The Event Highlights in Zurich and Surrounding Region
Whether related to sports, music or local customs – a host of first-class events are held throughout the year in the city of Zurich and the region around Lake Zurich.

Top Events in Zurich and in the Region

Zurich Tradition

At Zurich's traditional Sechseläuten event, the entire city celebrates the beginning of spring and watches on in anticipation as the “Böögg” – an effigy of a snowman perched on top of a huge pyre – is set on fire. For tradition has it that the faster the snowman’s head – which is filled with firecrackers – explodes, the more finer the forthcoming summer will be.

Summer Festivals

In summer, no matter what the weather, you never get bored in Zurich. The program of summer events is packed with musical and cultural gems – including the Street Parade, which every year gets hundreds of thousands of people dancing through the streets, the traditional Seenachtfest in Rapperswil, the Zurich Pride Festival, the Zurich Festival, the Zurich Theater Spektakel and countless other open-air events.

Sporty Zurich

The region around Lake Zurich has plenty to offer sports enthusiasts, too. Besides, the Zurich Marathon and the Ironman competitions in Rapperswil and Zurich attract amateur runners and top-class athletes alike. The world’s best athletes compete each September at the Weltklasse Zürich athletics meeting.

Christmas and New Year's Eve

Even as the year draws to an end, there is no end of things to experience. The Christmas markets in Rapperswil and Einsiedeln are among the most beautiful in the Zurich region, and the city center is also bathed in a festive ambiance. The New Year’s Eve Magic firework display, held over Lake Zurich, sees out the old year with a bang.
