For over 40 years, the international theater festival, Zürcher Theater Spektakel, has delighted spectators of all ages in a stunning location directly on the shores of Lake Zurich. The Landiwiese park near Wollishofen is transformed into an enchanting backdrop for performance and theater, with around 40 international ensembles performing their works on more than 10 stages.
Many locals have been visiting the barrier-free and inclusive Theater Spektakel since they were young. One reason for this – besides their openness towards and interest in the theater – is without doubt the beautiful location directly on Lake Zurich: here romantic sunsets over the lake create a truly magical atmosphere. At the same time, numerous street artists, music groups, bars, and restaurants delight all the senses. As a result, many people also use this charming festival as an attractive setting for a leisurely walk, the perfect Zurich photo, a refreshing swim, an afterwork beer with colleagues, or a Sunday outing with all the family.
This year's Theater Spektakel will take place not only on the Landiwiese: new projects will be shown in cooperation with the Fabriktheater (Rote Fabrik), Theater Hora, Gessnerallee, Tanzhaus Zürich, and Theater Neumarkt. They include productions by other institutions that are finally reaching audiences again after being closed for a long time due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
The architecture of the festival site takes into account the current restrictions: only one of the temporary venues will be built and the catering outlets have been reduced. Instead, there are a number of projects in public spaces, as well as a new stage on the lakeshore. As last year, street art can be viewed decentrally at various places in the city during the week and also centrally on the Landiwiese at the weekend.
