Oepfelchammer

Iconic venue in Zurich: the Oepfelchammer in the Niederdorf quarter was a favorite haunt of the Swiss writer, Gottfried Keller.

In the heart of Zurich’s Old Town lies the restaurant Oepfelchammer (loosely translated: Apple Chamber), lovingly nicknamed “Oeli”. The venue has been a landmark in Zurich’s gastronomic landscape for more than 200 years and is known for its unique mix of tradition and innovation.

Not only is “Oepfelchammer” a sight worth seeing but also a place full of weird traditions. Since 1801 the guests have been carving their names and little messages into the wooden benches and the wood panels on the wall. But the highlight is the so-called Balkenprobe (beam challenge), where the bravest must climb over two ceiling beams to then drink a glass of wine, headfirst – a fun and generation-old tradition.

The venue is also a very popular address to enjoy Zurich specialties. The cuisine focuses on regional classics prepared with fresh and seasonal products.
