Avant-garde: The term “avant-garde” refers to a movement in the arts or in politics which is forward thinking and which radically departs from existing ideological or aesthetic norms. Zurich has always been a hotspot for experimental proponents of the avant-garde. The Dada art movement, the legendary electronic music duo Yello, and the world-famous Helvetica font all have their origins in Zurich.

Born in the Old Town
Dada was founded in Zurich in 1916 amidst the turmoil of the First World War. Switzerland was an island of refuge, especially for artists and intellectuals. So while wars raged in Europe, art and free thought were still possible in Zurich.
