2.30pm: Children’s Parade
During the traditional children’s parade on the day before Sechseläuten, 2,000–3,000 children aged between 5 and 15 years walk through downtown Zurich dressed in historical costumes. They are accompanied by around 800 musicians from youth formations from the Zurich region.
Main Event: Monday, April 24, 2017
3.00pm: Sechseläuten Parade
The procession of the guilds to the bonfire comprises 3,500 guild members on foot, 350 horsemen, 50 horse-drawn parade floats and 30 music ensembles. The parade starts at the lower end of the Bahnhofstrasse and finishes at Sechseläutenplatz, where the bonfire with the Böögg is waiting.
6.00pm: The Pyre is Set Alight
The huge bonfire in the middle of Sechseläutenplatz is set alight. Tradition has it that the faster the Böögg’s head – which is packed with firecrackers – explodes, the finer the summer will be.
Approx. 8.00pm: Unofficial Public Sausage Barbecue
When the official part of the event is over, what is arguably the largest barbecue party in Switzerland takes place around the remains of the bonfire. People of all ages assemble on Sechseläutenplatz to barbecue their sausages over the embers of the bonfire. Some even refer to this as the “after-hour of the Böögg”.
