Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich

Zürich’s Tonhalle-Orchester has been delighting fans of classical music since 1868.

The Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich is one of Europe’s leading ensembles. Under its music director and chief conductor, Paavo Järvi, around 100 musicians present around 50 different programs each season.

Tonhalle or Kongresshaus?

Today, the Tonhalle-Orchester is at home in the Tonhalle Zurich. While Zurich’s very first Tonhalle stood on Sechsläutenplatz from 1867 to 1896, the Tonhalle Zurich was ceremoniously inaugurated by Johannes Brahms in 1895. On the occasion of the Swiss National Exhibition in 1939, the Tonhalle was integrated into the present-day Kongresshaus building. Fortunately, the two concert halls of the Tonhalle were preserved. To this day, the large concert hall has among the best acoustics in the world and can accommodate an audience of 1,500 people.

From 2017 to 2021, the orchestra performed at the interim venue, Tonhalle Maag in Zürich-West, while the Kongresshaus was being renovated. The wonderful spruce wood-paneled concert hall, which was built in the middle of an old industrial hall, had excellent acoustics and gave rise to sensational concert experiences that many a music fan will miss.
