Zurich’s “Samichlaus-Umzug” (Santa Claus Parade)

Every year at the end of November, Santa Claus makes his way through Zurich on the “Märlitram” (fairy-tale streetcar), followed by his “Schmutzli” sidekicks, along with other Santas.

When the Christmas lights of the Old Town shine in November, Santa Claus makes a live appearance in Zurich. Zurich’s traditional “Samichlaus-Umzug” (Santa Claus parade) starts at 5pm on the last Sunday evening of the month on Werdmühleplatz. From there, it continues along the festive Bahnhofstrasse to Bürkliplatz. At the head of the parade is the “Märlitram” streetcar, followed by floats with Santa Clauses and their companions, known as “Schmutzli”, who hand out small gifts to children along the way. Families and spectators can watch the action from the curbside. 

A little party awaits participants on Bürkliplatz, with music from a brass band – a joyful conclusion to the parade. Here, Santa Claus officially announces the start of Santa season and heralds the start of Advent.
