Die Stadtoase

This place really lives up to its name: an oasis surrounded by greenery, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

If, on the way to Zurich Zoo, you get out of the tram at the “Susenberg” stop and continue for a short distance, you will find a real gem on Tobelhofstrasse: a garden paradise with a sauna, an aikido dojo, a HerbaDea herb garden, and a huge meadow that invites visitors to relax and play. During the summer months, it is transformed into the romantic restaurant, Berg 8044. Under the open sky (and therefore weather permitting), beautifully decorated wooden tables and chairs stand on the grass – perfect for an intimate tête-à-tête or for groups enjoying a tavolata together.

History:

The Stadtoase was founded in 1891 as the Verein für Volksgesundheit Zürich VGZ (Zurich society for public health). Its objective was to teach people a healthy way of life by taking them “back to nature”. With its sunbathing area, it proved to be a great attraction. Various movements converged here – first and foremost vegetarians. There were also influences from the fields of naturopathy, naturism, and nutritional reform.
