Reformierte Kirche Horgen – a Rococo-style Trademark
The Rococo-style Protestant church with 70.5m tower is a landmark of Horgen built by Johann Jakob Haltiner in 1782.
The construction of this 4.2m long building was a considerable undertaking. Haltiner opted for a new form of church space. He moved away from the former single-axis, narrow nave design with a chancel and instead chose the new Rococo style. He proposed having a central space. The church became a meeting place for the local population who gathered around the pulpit and celebrated baptisms and Holy Communions at the heart of the community.
The roof trusses are a work of art in themselves, based on a self-supporting cantilever structure that enabled the construction of a large space without supports for the first time. Vorarlberg-based artist Andreas Moosbrugger decorated the interior of the church with striking Rococo stucco work.
