There is always a supply of fresh, top-quality drinking water in Zurich – thanks to more than 1,200 fountains that can be found every few meters throughout the city. As a result, Zurich is one of the cities with the largest number of fountains in the world. Fascinating stories and interesting facts and figures about some of these fountains can be heard on the “Water in Zurich” city tour.

Around 70 percent of Zurich’s drinking water comes from Lake Zurich and is distributed throughout the city via 1,550 kilometers of water pipes. Even during power outages, the population can be supplied with fresh water from 80 emergency fountains. These are fed by natural gravity.

Where Water Becomes Wine

The fountain with a diameter of around 6 meters (20 ft) stands on the historic Münsterhof, directly next to the Fraumünster Church. On special occasions, the fountain can be converted so that wine flows from one of its side taps.

The fountain at Enge harbor is connected to the earthquake station at the ETH Zurich: 12 water jets, which can spray the crystal-clear water from Lake Zurich into the air to heights of up to 35 metres (115 ft), represent the tremors of the earth in water form – based on real-time data on sesmic activity that is recorded at the ETH.

Zentralhof Fountain

Of Winged Lions and Oases

The Zentralhof was once a hub for stagecoach traffic. In the middle of the square was a drinking trough with water for the thirsty horses. In 1877, this was replaced by an imposing cast-iron fountain guarded by three winged lions. Nowadays, the inner courtyard is one of the most beautiful oases in Zurich.
