Public Transportation with the Zürich Card
You profit from unlimited travel by tram, bus, rail and cable car throughout the city of Zurich and its surrounding area.
Zürich Card holders enjoy free, unrestricted 2nd class travel on public transportation in the city of Zurich (fare zone 110) and surrounding region (fare zones 111, 121, 140, 150, 154 and 155). This also includes:
- transfer between Zurich Airport and Zurich city
- an excursion up the Uetliberg, Zurich’s local “mountain”
Travel Outside the Validity Area
All the public transportation companies in the canton of Zurich belong to the Zurich Transportation Network (ZVV). The area covered by the ZVV network is divided into various fare zones. If you are traveling outside the area covered by the Zürich Card, you will need to buy a zone upgrade. In combination with the zone upgrade for four zones, your Zürich Card entitles you to travel in all zones of the network.
Travel in 1st Class
In Zurich, a choice of classes is only offered in SBB S-Bahn trains and on certain boats. In all other forms of transport, such as trams and buses, there is only one category. The Zürich Card is valid for 2nd class travel. If you would like to travel 1st class, you need to buy a 1st class upgrade at an automatic ticket machine or ticket counter.
Travel at Night
On Fridays and Saturdays, the ZVV operates services throughout the night. These night trains or buses are specially marked with an "N" and require a valid ticket (such as the Zürich Card) plus a separate night supplement ticket costing CHF 5. Night supplement tickets are available from ticket machines, at ticket counters or by SMS (text "NZ" to 988; CHF 5 per SMS).
A surcharge applies in addition to the standard ticket price for travel on Lake Zurich Navigation Company (ZSG) boats on Lake Zurich, the upper lake and the Limmat. The CHF 5 surcharge can be paid at the Bürkliplatz sales point, at all ticket machines, by SMS (text "ZSG-SZ" to 988; CHF 5 per SMS) and on board of the boats. More information about tickets can be found at zvv.ch
