Foot et Monde Arabe: Football-Cluture-Society
In the Arab world, football cannot be summed up in terms of a victory or a team. This special exhibition highlights that football, culture, and society are woven together in the Arab world.
In the Arab world, football cannot be summed up in terms of a victory or a team. From its introduction in the 1880s to the superstars who emerged out of the Arab World in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, this special exhibition highlights that football, culture, and society are woven together, shaping the Arab world both inside and outside the stadium.
‘Foot et Monde Arabe’ is a collection of stories about football’s role in colonialism and decolonisation, the creation of nations and national identities, the journey of women’s liberation, political revolutions, migration, multiculturalism, and of Arab identity in a globalised world. It shows that football is integral to understanding the cultural and social issues that have shaped the Arab world – on home soil and beyond.
This special exhibition is adapted from the exhibition “Foot et Monde Arabe” presented by the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris between 10 April and 21 July 2019.
