On February 2 & 3, 2017, around 90 researchers from both home and abroad convened at Zurich University to attend the educational-scientific conference on the theme of “Transformation of the knowledge system in schools (19th & 20th centuries) – school subjects, curricula and teaching aids”. The multilingual conference marked the end of a four-year research project conducted by the Swiss National Fund (SNF) in collaboration with five Swiss universities in the German-, French- and Italian-speaking regions of the country.
In the course of 30 presentations, questions from educational-historical and didactical perspectives were discussed. These included such issues as: Who decides the curricula, school subjects and teaching aids and based on which criteria and legitimation? How changeable/stable are the content and objectives of school subjects? How have the didactical principles of teaching changed?
Zurich is a highly suitable location for a national or international conference, because the city is extremely easy to travel to, both by train and by plane. Thanks to the central location of the university, the Old Town or the lake can be quickly and easily reached and explored on foot. The giveaways from Zürich Tourism were not just useful, but also a great souvenir to take home.
