Human beings share certain characteristics with the larger tree-living mammals: e.g. hands with the capacity to grip things, memory and the care and attention we give to our young. Over the ages, climate, vegetation and environment have brought about changes in these characteristics. Fossils provide a fascinating record of the gradual transformation that now separates man from monkey. To begin with, man's existence was closely linked to trees. Nowadays, however, he is gradually destroying his roots - and a fundamental life-giving basis along with them.
