Art, architecture and design in Zürich

Galleries

Together with New York, London, Paris and Berlin, Zürich belongs in the league of the world’s leading art cities, with a dense concentration of galleries. In the “art mile” of the Rämistrasse, the galleries are just steps apart from each other; at the site of the former Löwenbräu brewery, galleries stand side by side.

Museums

Out of more then 50 museums in Zürich, around 14 are devoted to art. The Swiss national Museum more than 100 years old is a unique setting for exhibitions: behind the walls, history comes alive in a very special way. The Rietberg Museum, one of the main international centres for non-European art, has reopened its doors: the new building “emerald”, consists of an architecturally spectacular glass pavilion that fits in perfectly among the surrounding villas.

The Dolder Grand

New arrivals

Great artists and architects such as Santiago Calatrava, Max Bill an Tilla Theus have all left their marks on Zürich. Currently, the world-renowned architect Norman Foster is adding new areas to one of the world’s finest hotels, The Dolder Grand. It will reopen its door in 2008.

In the former industrial quarter of Zürich-West, factory buildings have found a new lease of life as venues for cultural activities. The Schiffbau for example, where once ships were built, is now a setting for jazz concerts, theatre productions and fine cuisine. On the site of a former paper factory, Sihlcity is a whole new urban quarter, which successfully blends modern and older architecture.
