Lake Zürich

The slightly curved Lake Zürich is surrounded, on the left side by yet dense forests and hills stretching from Albis to Zimmerberg, and, on the right side, by the Pfannenstil region.

Water flowing into the lake from the cliffs of both chains of hills cut deep gorges into the moraines and deposited sand and gravel in both coastal areas. The moraines formed elements which left their mark on the landscape. Looking down the south-eastern side from Zürich, the suburbs of Zürich become increasingly replaced by more rural coastal zones.

The lake can be crossed, on the one hand, by means of the ferry running between Meilen and Horgen, and, on the other hand, by the Seedamm completed in 1878, which connects the lake's coasts at its most narrow point between Hurden and Rapperswil. And pedestrians can cross the lake on the newly constructed wooden bridge stretching from Rapperswil to Hurden.

In the past, the lake was mainly used as a highway and place of transportation. Today, it is a wellknown, appealing destination for tourists coming form near and far. Taking a boat trip on a sunny day in the summer no doubt belongs to one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a day in the region.

Length of coast 87.60 km
Total surface 88.66 km2
Deepest point 143.00 m (between Herrliberg and Oberrieden)
Widest point 3.85 km (between Stäfa and Richterswil)
Middle water level 405.95 meters above sea level
Inflow Linth in Schmerikon
Outlet Limmat in Zürich

1200 fountains

In Zürich, if you get thirsty, there is no need to look for a supermarket, since you can simply quench your thirst at the nearest fountain. And you will never have far to go because, with a total of around 1,200, Zürich has one of the greatest number of fountains in the world. Indeed, many of Zürich’s fountains are small-scale works of art with a fascinating history.
