Zürich Opera House

A home for muses, a place for art

The Zurich Opera House was the first Opera House in all of Europe that had electric lighting. The neo-baroque theatre building in front of the Sechseläuten green space on the shore of Lake Zürich was built in 1891 upon 1,800 oak piles. The first opera performed there was Richard Wagner’s ‘Lohengrin’.

The history of the Zurich Opera House is full of highlights: Wilhelm Furtwängler started his career here, and Richard Wagner’s ‘Parsifal’ was performed here in 1913 – the first time it had ever been performed outside Bayreuth. Ferruccio Busoni, Paul Hindemith, Richard Strauss, Othmar Schoeck, Arthur Honegger, Frank Martin and other famous composers all influenced the development of Zürich’s musical and theatrical life.

The Zurich Opera House is considered one of the best venues in the world for opera. In more than 270 performances per season, such international singing stars as Anna Netrebko, Cecilia Bartoli or Jonas Kaufmann and many others can be experienced live at the Zurich Opera House.

Dadahaus Cabaret Voltaire

The Dada art movement was founded in 1916 in the Cabaret Voltaire, on Spiegelgasse, as a “protest against the madness of the times”. Artists, musicians, dancers and literati met in the Cabaret Voltaire and called the entire existing art into question.

The reopening of the Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich’s Old Town in October 2004 marked the beginning of a brand new Dada era. Nowadays, the Dadahaus, with its exhibitions, events and bar, as well as its small specialized lending library, is open to the public. Dada enthusiasts will particularly enjoy a stay at the Hotel Limmatblick, where all of the rooms are individually decorated in Dada style.

Dining Under Works of Art

The Restaurant Kronenhalle was once a meeting point for musicians, actors, literati and artists. Some of them paid with works of art, with the result that today guests can dine at this establishment – a popular haunt among the rich and famous – under genuine Chagalls, Picassos and Mirós.

A more modern style of art can be admired in the small Spiegelsaal (Mirror Room) at the Restaurants Segantini. Here, the sun shines whatever the weather; the installations by multimedia artist Ugo Rondinone, sculpted from thousands of mirror fragments, together with the reflected orchids, radiate a touch of exotic glamour.

For those favoring the ambience created by elegant, history-steeped dining rooms, the guild houses are ideal venues.

Today, the Schauspielhaus offers a diverse and exciting program and 20 to 30 premières each year.
