Rüti Rapperswil

Rapperswil - Wald

Starting point

Rapperwil, station

Places along the route

Rapperswil - Jona - Tägernau - Ermenswil - Lütschbach - Diemberg - Laupen - Güntisberg - Wald

Itinerary

The bike tour from Rapperswil via Laupen up to the Hiltis and Güntisberg to Wald is a 22 km long treat for mountain-bike fans. The stretch has great variety and you will need good equipment; a touring bike or city bike will make it more a trial than a pleasure. The ride through the terraced landscape south of Rüti is also of geologic interest, for the chain of hills running parallel is witness to the glacierization of the region around upper Lake Zurich. F rom Rapperswil the route passes through the Jona woods. In the Aspwald two routes lead to Ermenswil, one following the well-traveled, constantly climbing gravel road through the woods; the other more adventurous, following the hiking path along the ridge. This one is technically demanding and requires skill and balance. The path is narrow, full of roots, and therefore not a trail for beginners. After Ermenswil the asphalt road climbs continually to Chraueren, an ideal route for condition training. Thereafter one can relax a bit on an easy route through a field down to Lauben. The climb up the Hiltisberg may also be done on two routes of varying difficulty. Either one chooses the paved road and pedals steadily upwards or one decides on the hiking path, which is sometimes so steep that one must carry one's bike. Both however make it easy to master the approx. 100 meters difference in altitude to the top of the Hiltisberg. There the superb view and the pleasant restaurant with its outdoor seating tempt you to stay a while. You'll look out to the south over Lake Zurich and the upper lake, down to the terraced landscape you've already traversed and up to the pre-alpine range, which looks very close. Thus strengthened, you'll master the remaining 70 meters of altitude to the Güntisberg. The downhill stretch on the paved but bumpy road via Nüholz to Wald finishes the two-hour tour and demands concentration and good brakes.

Note(s)

You need good equipment!

Variations

Variante A: On the path through the Aspwald. Variante B: On the path to Hiltisberg.
