Starting point

Felsenegg, Bergstation Seilbahn

Places along the route

Felsenegg - Balderen - Mädikon - Folenweid - Uetliberg/Uto Kulm - Hohenstein - Triemli

Itinerary

There are many ways to get up to the Uetliberg. This is clear from the many people that one meets there, especially at this time of year. Just as in the last ice age, when its 869-meter high peak rose up from the Linth glacier, it often stands today imposingly above the fog. It thus enables many Zurich city inhabitants a bit of sun on gray days. In Adliswil take the aerial tramway, renovated last winter, to Felsenegg. There you turn to the north and follow the ridge along the Albis. After 300 meters you'll arrive at the first tourist attraction. This is the radio tower, which looks like a monster from a science fiction film and can be seen for miles around. Built in 1959, it has been used for the last four years by Skyguide, the provider of civil and military air navigation services in Switzerland, as a radar receiving station. The next tourist attraction has to do with things that are far, far away from the earth. On the Planet Trail between Büchenegg and Uetliberg station, all the planets of the solar system are represented in a ratio of one to a billion. Information boards provide information about the size, positions and orbits of Saturn, Pluto and co. Families especially will appreciate these trail markers along the way. The Uet-liberg trail wanders through and along the perimeters of beech woods and across meadows. As most of the leaves have already fallen, the view is better than in summer. In many spots one can see on the right side nearly the whole of Lake Zurich, while on the left side the landscapes of Canton Aargau and Canton Lucerne are visible. The climb down from Zurich's mountain takes you further north before you take the Hohensteinweg toward the city and arrive at Triemli. From there you can get back to Zurich's main station on the S10.

Variations

Variant A: From Albisgüetli on the Denzlerweg to Uto Kulm (not marked on the map).

Ricken, Alp Egg

Places along the route

Alp Egg - Regelstein - Oberbächen - Tanzboden - Cholwald - Wielesch - Chlosterberg - Alp Egg

Itinerary

The slowly ascending hiking path from the Alp Egg parking lot runs eastward, at first through meadows on up to the Regelstein, altitude 1315 meters. From now on the path itself is the border dividing the Linth area from the Toggenburg. Sometimes through meadows, sometimes in the woods, up and down but without much difference in altitude, one reaches in approx. 40 minutes the signpost pointing to Alp Wielesch (shortcut 1) as well as straight on to Alp Oberbächen. From the latter one hikes through the woods in the Stotzweid direction, and then on a meadow path that becomes gradually steeper via «Tschochen» and soon reaches Tanzboden (1443m). After a rest one returns on the same path to the «Tschochen» signpost. From here one hikes southwest via Alp Stock to the Bergstrasse, which leads to the Cholwald alpine restaurant at 950m. A few meters beyond the Cholwald, the paved road branches off to the right. At the end of this road lies the Wielesch summer restaurant (1167m). From here one crosses a meadow in a northerly direction, and then, after approx. 100 meters, turns onto a path through the woods. One soon crosses the first forest road and shortly thereafter comes to the second forest road, on which one continues, going northwest. At the end of this gravel road one arrives at the hiking trail created in 1988 by the Gommiswald men's sports club, leading to the Chlosterberg alpine restaurant (1025m). Now comes the last stretch, namely the approx. 20 minutes climb back to our starting point at Alp Egg.

Note(s)

Ideal pre-summer, summer and autumn hike at an altitude varying between 1200 and 1444 meters. An early winter storm in late autumn can make this hike impossible.

Variations

Alternative A: Shortcut 1: shortly before reaching Alp Oberbächen, a hiking path signpost points to the direct trail to Alp Wielesch. Hiking time can thus be reduced by a good 2 hours. Alternative B: Shortcut 2: a bit beyond Alp Oberbächen the path branches in two different directions. Straight on is the path to the Riedner Alp Tanzboden. Here is another possibility to choose the path to the right, down to Hinteren Cholwald (1000m), where one reaches the forest road that climbs up to the Wielesch summer res

Antidepressant between two Lakes

Starting point

Places along the route

Luegeten - St. Meinrad - Chörnlisegg - Stöcklichrüz - Gueteregg - Grueb - Stöcklichrüz - Chörnlisegg - St. Meinrad - Luegeten

Itinerary

The sunny Höhenrücken between Lake Zurich and the Sihlsee is ideal for bringing one out of one's winter depression. The high point of this spring hike is the Stöcklichrüz. From the Pfäffikon SZ railway station one takes the bus in the Feusisberg direction, getting out at the Etzelpass stop and hiking for 300 meters along the steep little roads of the pass. Then one turns into the woods and completes the considerable but picturesque climb to the top of the pass. Following the long shady stretch one comes into the sun again near the Meinrad chapel and can enjoy the lovely view of the mountains of the Innerschweiz - the original part of Switzerland. Then one crosses a small high moor and climbs up to Chörnlisegg. This is the part of the hike with the best outlooks: to the left one sees all of Lake Zurich, to the right the Sihlsee, beyond which stretch the mountains of Schwyz and Uri. One attains about 1200 meters for a bit and then descends toward Stöcklichrüz. The view from the Stöcklichrüz is wonderful. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the alpine restaurant Gueteregg, in which one can strengthen oneself for the return hike. There are a few alternatives for the trail back to the flatland. The hiking trails go to Lachen, Willerzell, or, once again by way of Stöcklichrüz, to Altendorf or toward Pfäffikon SZ.

Variations

Alternative A: From the Gueteregg to Willerzell (total distance: 13.5 km). Alternative B: From the Gueteregg to Lachen (total distance: 16.7 km). Alternative C: From Stöcklichrüz to Altendorf (total distance: 15.9 km)

Starting point

Wald, post bus station Faltigberg/Höhenklinik

Places along the route

Faltigberg - Farneralp - Schwarzenberg - Höchhand - Tössscheidi - Brandenfelshöhle - Wolfsgrueb - Sagenraintobel - Wald

Itinerary

At the «Faltigberg/Höhenklinik» post bus station, one follows the signs to Farner. After crossing the Oberholz ski lift, one arrives three quarters of an hour later on the Farneralp, covered with trees so one does not have a good view. The mountain terminus of the ski lift offers a better view. On the way to the Schwarzenberg one wants to watch out for cow pats. The tree-covered Schwarzenberg, like its neighbor to the south, also does not afford a good view. At Schwämi one can choose among various trails, and the partly very steep and slippery direct path to Tössscheidi can be avoided if one goes eastwards (Alternative A). If one is hungry, the restaurant Poo-Alp can be reached by going in a southwesterly direction for a few minutes. From the Tössscheidi one follows the gravel path that runs along the Vorderstöss for a kilometer. Then one crosses on a little footbridge and climbs up to the Brandenfelshöhle. The direct trail from this cave to Wolfsgrueb is not easy, as it is narrow and slippery and occasionally one must climb over tree trunks. After Wolfsgrueb comes the crowning finale: one follows in Sagenraintobel the Schmittenbach, with its romantic waterfalls and little ponds, for a half hour.

Variations

Alternative A: Shortcut from Schwämi directly to Wolfsgrueb. Alternative B: By way of Oberholz to the Hittenberg, where one can get one's strength back in the «Lauf» the best restaurant for miles around.

Itinerary

The route from the Erlenbach railway station and that from the boat station meet on the Wallenthalstrasse. The hiking path toward Pfluegstein soon branches off. The hike continues up through the Erlenbach Tobel to Höhschutzfall. The path, well cared for by the local tourist office, takes us through a mostly natural area beside a brook. While the path to Kittenmüli continues straight on, we keep to the left. A short detour takes one to the shooting practice site (take the Forchstrasse during shooting practice) and the marked Küsnacht-Egg path to the Tüfi, point 663. An attractive sandstone fountain at the Holzkorporation Erlenbach's forest house was erected in the jubilee year 1991. Passing through the sunny Ruchweid area, one arrives at Hohrüti and the clearing in Chüelenmorgen, where several hiking paths meet. Continuing on toward Egg, take the path through the meadows. To the left is the Waldhof restaurant. The view opens out near the houses in Vorder Guldenen, and here is the start of the descent through the Hinteregger Berg. Coming out of the woods, the village of Egg, parts of the Greifensee and the county seat, Uster, lie before us. The Catholic Church in Egg is worth a visit, with its relic of St. Anthony of Padua. And then it is just a few minutes to the Forchbahn railway station.

Note(s)

Attention: take a detour around the shooting practice site when it is in use!

Variations

At the Guldener Höch, a pretty forest clearing, the hike continues in the Pfannenstiel Hochwacht direction. From Hochwacht one follows the sign to Toggwil, and then downhill into the valley. Where theJakob-Ess-Weg branches off to the left, one stays to the right and passes through the Rappentobel nature preserve to the little village of Toggwil. The Meilen «Dorfbachtobelweg» starts here - a trail through the wooded gully, shady and varied, following the babbling brook and passing by many glacial boulders. One winds around fallen trees and leaves the woods, arriving in a few minutes at the endpoint of this hike. The return trip may be made from the train station or the Meilen boat dock.

From Bratwurst Country to the Linth Valley

Starting point

Ebnat-Kappel, train station

Places along the route

Ebnat-Kappel - Abschlagen - Tanzboden - Breitenau - Wielesch - Giegental - Gommiswald

Itinerary

The alpine restaurant Tanzboden lies halfway between the Toggenburg and the Linth valley. It is thus the ideal stopping point on a hike from one valley to the other. You begin this hike at the Ebnat-Kappel railway station and wander upriver along the Thur riverbank for a few minutes. At Thurau you will cross a bridge and start upward, putting behind you the first of the 800 meters difference in altitude that separate you from the Tanzboden. More than half the dis-tance to Tanzboden traverses narrow, sometimes scarcely visible paths through blooming meadows. Of interest are the differences in vegetation as one climbs: in May the meadow grasses bloom up to an altitude of 850 meters, whereas at a height of between 850 and 1200 meters the grass is still re-covering from the long winter, and there are no blossoms to be seen. Further up, however, thousands of gentians and soldanels spring up between the brown winter grasses. Especially impressive is the Alp Ober-Abschlagen. The brutal name is quite in opposition to the charm of the place. On three sides the climb up to this alp is very steep, so it is the more surprising to find at the top a small, nearly flat pre-alpine paradise. From the northern part of this Alp you are rewarded with a magnificent view of the central Toggenburg. Ebnat-Kappel and Wattwil lie below you; to the east you see the Säntis and the Churfirsten. And now it is only a half hour from Ober-Abschlagen to the Tanzboden, the highest point of our trip. Finally, our hike continues over the Gubelspitz to Breitenau and Wielesch, where there is another alpine restaurant with a marvelous view. From the Wielesch, you'll climb steeply down into the Giegentobel and continue on to the Giegental. Finally, board the post bus in the village center of Gommiswald and ride to the Uznach railway station.

Variations

Version A: From Tanzboden to Rieden (4 km shorter).

St. Gallenkappel - Rappengrund - Aatal - Neuhüslertobel - Bauwil - Uznaberg - Aabachmündung - Schmerikon

Itinerary

Between St. Gallenkappel and Schmerikon, you walk through Neuhüslertobel and to the mouth of the Aabach. In the course of this walk, you follow a body of water, which is first called Goldingerbach and then Aabach. The Goldingerbach (Goldinger stream) originates at the southern slope of Chrüzegg and winds its way through Goldingertal (Goldinger valley), against the Obersee. Its name comes from the gold seekers who made their discoveries in its headwater region. The gold seekers probably also dug at its lower course in Neuhüslertobel and at the foot of the Uznaberg. It is also possible that they no longer made any discoveries there. Perhaps this is the reason why the stream loses its glamorous name in this area and from this point on is modestly called "Aabach". In Neuhüslertobel, between Neuhaus and St. Gallenkappel, flora and fauna are the only living organisms that you encounter on a fall Sunday morning. No wonder, because from the northeast you can gain access to the ravine by taking a long detour and by climbing up several meters of altitude. A few steps away from the moraine landscape in Rappengrund, you begin the descent to Neuhüslertobel. The first inhabitants of the ravine that you can see are a few trouts. Information signs explain who else lives in this mossy crevice. Woodpeckers, kingfishers, various raptors and songbirds, badgers, deer, bats, lizards and grass snakes are a few of these. After the underpass of Rickenstrasse, the trail no longer follows the Aabach, but instead makes a detour through Matten to Bauwil. Only at the junction of Ranzachtobel does the road pass directly by the water again. Apart from a short detour at the Schmerikon highway exit, you follow the Aabach until it flows into the Obersee. This detour is worth it since the pebble beaches in this area are one of the most beautiful lake shores of the region. The best way to conclude the hike is to have a meal on the terrace of the "Strandhotel" in Schmerikon. The food and the service are at least as good as the exclusive location of the restaurant.

GPS hiking tour from the moorland to Rossberg

Starting point

Dritte Altmatt

Places along the route

Dritte Altmatt - Bibersteg - St. Jost - Raten - Gottschalkenberg - Höhronen - Rossberg - Schindellegi

Itinerary

When we hike from the Dritte Altmatt (Third Altmatt) to Schindellegi, we find ourselves in three magically beautiful landscapes: a colorful moorland, a magnificent glade and a mountain that is actually an offshoot. In the 1980's, towards the end of the Cold War, the Swiss army wanted to establish a military training ground in the moor of Rothenthurm. However, in 1987 the Swiss people adopted the Rothenthurm Initiative. Since then, the largest moorland and all the other upland moors of Switzerland have been under protection. That is a good thing since it is especially in the fall when a wonderful colorful landscape unfolds up here, which people prefer to enjoy without shooting noise and diesel smell. It is primarily in the mornings when the Bibäränäfel (fog named after the Biber river) offers special effects that are worth seeing. Starting from the Dritte Altmatt (previously Altun Matta, Latin for high-altitude meadow), you pass through the moor in a western direction. After crossing the Biber and the Canton boundary, the trail ascends in the direction of St. Jost. The glade that is approximately the size of five soccer fields and is 1150 meters above sea level is magnificent: it slopes down in a southern direction and provides an unobstructed view freely of the Alps. A small tavern and a chapel offer the opportunity to take a rest. On the remainder of the trail in the direction of Raten and Gottschalkenberg, you are in the company of countless hikers and walkers for just about one hour. Only on the wooded ridge of Höhronen you find yourself alone again. Where the forest is sparse, you get a view of the Lake Zurich and the Alps. At the Dreiländerstein Schwyz, Zug and Zurich, the trail steeply descends to another magically beautiful place. It is Rossberg, which is actually not a mountain but rather a saddle-shaped northern offshoot of the Höhronen. At the Rossberg Inn, you can sit down on the terrace that has a view to Lake Zurich and Säntis. From there, it descends again in the direction of Schindellegi, where you can take the train.

Variations

Variante A: Start in Sattel via Tänndlichrü to St. Jost (additional 2 hours)

Starting point

Forch, rail station

Places along the route

Forch - Hohrüti - Tobelmüli - Drachenhöhle - Alexanderstein - Küsnacht

Itinerary

Starting at the Forch railway station, you take the trail to the Pfannenstiel and then turn toward Herrliberg. After 1.5 kilometers in the woods you will arrive at the Rüsselbach near Hohrüti, which has carved out a little ravine near its source and the top of the Pfannenstiel. It is advantageous to wear sturdy shoes with a good profile, for the snow lasts a long time here and on the many stairs that we will climb down on the way to Küsnacht. The water that seeps out of the steep hillsides has positive and negative effects. On the one hand there are the many beautiful icicles that get larger and larger as the winter nears an end, on the other hand there are many dangerous icy spots on the trail. Below Zumikon, where the Rüsselbach becomes the Dorfbach, you can see kingfishers. A ten-minute side trip takes one to the Wulphügel, site of the Wulp castle ruins, and also worth seeing is the Drachenhöhle, 20 meters above the trail. Children especially will enjoy this pudding stone boulder full of holes. At the end of the hike you'll pass several glacial boulders, among them the gigantic Alex-ander stone, and finally you'll arrive at the center of Küsnacht.

Variations

Variant A: From the rail station Zumikon to the Tobel on the hiking trail towards Küsnacht (shortens the way about one half). Variant B: Side trail to the ruin Wulp (Duration: 20 min) Variant C: Side trail to the Schübelweiher (Duration: 20 min)

Kaltbrunn, Mittlerwengi

Places along the route

Mittlerwengi - Wengibach - Oberbogmen - Mittlerwengi

Itinerary

The Wengi is one of the most beautiful, spectacular natural landscapes in the St. Gall section of the Linth region. From here one can admire the nearby Speer, with its 1950 meters the highest pudding stone mountain in Europe. It appears to consist of bands of stone and meadows creating terraces, so that it has the effect of the reviewing stand in a gigantic amphitheater. Well worth an excursion is the Wengibach, flowing toward Rieden and interspersed with many waterfalls and pools. You can make a fire, build dams and rope bridges and then jump into the cool mountain water. There are numerous places on the shores of the brook that adults will find romantic and children adventurous. Being well supplied for a picnic and a day of adventure on the mountain stream means loading up the car with blankets, towels, rope, extra clothing for children and all one's food and drink for the day. Drive through Kaltbrunn or Rieden to the Mittlerwengi parking area. Only a few meters away, near the turnoff to Bogmen, there are lovely spots on the water. If this is too shady, follow the hiking trail 400 meters further to the Speer. This is the perfect spot for a picnic; little waterfalls and pools, a large meadow, trees for shade. A number of fireplaces are available. Be careful going toward the valley, as there a several waterfalls more than five meters high. If you have the energy, the climb up to Bogmen is worth it. The last part is very steep, but takes only a bit more than half an hour. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with refreshment in the alpine restaurant and a good view over the Linth and Lake Zurich.

Itinerary

From Mittlerwengi one climbs up to Alp Hinterwengi (1321 m), from there with very little difference in altitude into the Wengital toward Chüemettler. The narrow mountain trail, which now climbs rapidly, takes one in approx. half an hour to Chüemettler-Furggen (1603 m). In order to reach the peak of Chüemettler one must hike along the Chüemettler ridge. Now we come to the steep, but well-made mountain path along the west flank. From the Chüemettler peak, approx. 100 meters to the south, a yellow sign shows the start of the trail down to Alp Obere Bogmen. Although this path is steep, there are metal railings or strong ropes for the safety of the hiker along the most difficult sections. And once you have the first hundred meters of this descent behind you, you can be proud to have accomplished the most difficult phase of this hike. Soon you will reach the next stopping point, the Alp Obere Bogmen (1383 m). From there it is only 20 minutes down through the «Striggital» to your starting point.

The Gross Aubrig is the nearest real mountain to Lake Zurich, and also the one that can be climbed earliest in the year. Its peak, at markedly less than 2000 m (1695), is far lower than those of its Wägital neighbors. Between mid-May and mid-June it is covered with especially beautiful flowers. Leaving Siebnen, one travels on the post bus along the Innerthal dam, and after walking along the road for half a kilometer, one takes the trail in the direction of Gross Aubrig. The path is a washed-out trough, like a trench. The first 300 meters are steep and stony. Thereafter comes a romantic forest with magnificent firs, in which wooded planks make the going easier. The Alp Bärlaui is a magnificent sea of flowers and a less steep stretch. Finally, winding paths lead up to the top, and at this point comes the technically most difficult part of this mountain hike. The Gross Aubrig looks like the tip of a thumb. On its northern side and its flanks there are abysses, so that one should choose this route only in very dry weather. For a few meters we now have flat land under our feet, then come two climbs and descents, until one arrives at the mountain restaurant Wildegg. Below the Chrummflue one descends into Chilentobel. In this spectacular wooded ravine one can cool off a bit before one starts to sweat again on the flat section near Euthal.

The Au peninsula is an oasis of nature and fruit trees. The arrival by water sets the mood, and gives us the opportunity to travel on the Panta Rhei. We inquire of the ZVV-Contact (Tel. 0848 988 988) when this ship makes the run to the island. We reserve through Zürichsee Gastro (Tel. 044 487 13 13) a table in the first upper deck (Tip: Take one at the front of the boat, there you have the best view on three sides.). As we are taking the Panta Rhei only as far as the Au peninsula, we order just one course. The trip takes an hour, and then the boat docks and we climb up the hill, following the signs to the Weinbaumuseum (wine museum). There we walk along a path that takes us between a picturesque little lake and a vineyard and leads to the castle. Here there is a well cared for park with beautiful trees, inviting us to stay a while. After our siesta we follow the hiking path to Schifflände, the goal of many for picnicking, swimming and sunbathing on sunny days. After walking around the peninsula we take the steamboat Stadt Rapperswil to the city of Rapperswil.

Pfäffikon (ZH), rail station

Places along the route

Pfäffikon ZH - Seegräben - Robenhuserriet - Kempten - Wagib - Rosinli - Adetswil

Itinerary

The landscape in the triangle between Bubikon, Fehraltdorf and Gossau is slightly elevated and far enough away from the southernmost hills of the pre-alpine area that the residents of the Zurich Oberland can look over the Albis, Höhronen and Stöcklichrüz deep into the Alps. In spring, the many snow-covered jagged peaks on the horizon make up a spectacular contrast to the green surfaces and woods in the foreground. From Pfäffikon railway station, you walk along the path directly to the lake. A gravel trail brings you along the protected shore and into a marsh. Notable on your hike through this nearly unspoiled landscape are the rustic-romantic Seegräben beach, the picturesque village of Seegräben and the broad Robenhuserriet. As you traverse the Robenhuserriet, you can see the Rosinli, which you will climb at the end of your three-hour hike. In the past, the walk to the popular excursion restaurant took place mostly on side streets, but in 2008 the association of Zurich hiking trails constructed a new, sign-posted path. To be sure, upon leaving the Auslikon beach it continues through the not particularly attractive center of Kempten. But then it snakes along ravines and woods up to Wabig. The location of this unspoiled hamlet with its old farmhouses could not be more beautiful. You are at nearly 800 meters altitude, so you'll see even more Alpine peaks. And even more spectacular is the view from the terrace of the Rosinli, a mountain restaurant. No fewer than 100 Alpine peaks can be seen between the Mürtschenstock (to the southeast) and the Pilatus (to the southwest). You'll get an excellent view of the Eiger, Mönch and Finsteraahorn. One thing needs to be cleared up: to be sure, there are in the Zurich Oberland a great many unconventional names for towns, mountains and meadows: Türli, Neu York, Orn, Nübruch and so on. But even among these names, the Rosinli is special. How did it come about that a restaurant and a mountain acquired such a name? The answer: in the 60s the owner of the restaurant had a wife name Rosanna, and he named this place Rosinli in her honor.

Rapperswil - Hurden - Stn. Hurden

Itinerary

This walk starts at the Rapperswil railway station. Go through the railway underpass and a few minutes later you'll already be at the beginning of the attractive wooden walkway. The filigree wooden construction is perfect for observing the rich flora and fauna in this protected natural area. The late Gothic chapel of Unsere Liebe Frau is the terminus of this half-hour walk. This region was not unknown to the many travelers from the north who knew Lake Zurich and Rapperswil as a stop on their way to Santiago de Compostela, on the route of St. James. A rickety, torturous wooden bridge with loose boards helped them across the lake. Since the 19th century a dam with a road has allowed the traveler to cross at the narrowest point between Rapperswil and Hurden. But the wooden bridge has not been forgotten, and in April 2001 a 841 meter long modern wooden walkway was opened on the site of the old footbridge. Walking across it is an adventure, as one finds oneself in the middle of the lake and at the same time feels solidly connected with both shores. On the Rappeerswil shore the little pilgrims' park is an inviting place to stop and picnic.

Itinerary

Starting in Wattwil (Alternative A), we walk in the direction of the Maria der Engel monastery. Passing Burg Iberg, we climb up away from the road over Schlosswies to upper Laad. After crossing over the Laadpass to Laad, the hike continues on an old trail lined with hedges. At Oberricken we leave the Toggenburg valleys and enter the lake district. Passing through several ravine-like sections, we come out to a section that runs through woods and pastures, with a view of Lake Zurich, and reach Rüeterswil and its St. Ursula chapel, which features a statue of St. James. We make a loop through Betzikon, avoiding street traffic, and arrive at St. Gallenkappel. Hiking along the Aabach-Tobel, we come to the St. James chapel in Neuhaus, on the other side of the brook. The trail now runs through Eschenbbach to Egg and then along the ridge through the Jona woods to Jona. In a short time we find ourselves in the rose city of Rapperswil on Lake Zurich, where the imposing 12th century castle presides over the old city.

Starting point

Places along the route

Rapperswil - Hurden - Pfäffikon - Luegeten - St. Meinrad - Tüfelsbrugg - Galgenchappeli - Einsiedeln

Itinerary

Leaving Rappeerswil, we take the wooden pedestrian bridge, opened in 2001 and passing along the lake dam away from traffic, to Pfäffikon. As early as 1358-1878 there was a similar wooden bridge across the lake. A relict from these times is reached by the new bridge, the Heilighüsli, a bridge chapel from the 16th century. In Pfäffikon the route begins to climb steadily through narrow alleyways, reaching the Luegeten. We are rewarded for our efforts by a wonderful view of upper Lake Zurich and Lake Zurich itself with its islands, Ufenau and Lützelau. The trail is flatter for a short distance, and then climbs steeply again, passing the Meinrad spring and arriving at the Etzelpass at 950 m altitude. There we find the Pilgerhaus (1759) and the Meinrad chapel (1697/98), where the hermit Meinrad lived before he moved on to Einsiedeln. Now we get a view of the «Innerschweiz», the original Switzerland, and we can see the Sihlsee, the Rigi and the Mythen. Now we go down to the Tüfelsbrugg, which takes us across the Sihl. On the other side the hike passes through a high moor on the Hinterhorgen. We now go in a southerly direction to the Galgenchappeli, location of the court and the Einsiedeln high court until the end of the old confederation. After a visit to the St. Gangulf chapel, we find ourselves almost immediately at the large square in front of the imposing Benedictine monastery of Einsiedeln. The present monastery and abbey church was built during the years 1680-1780 on the spot where the hermit Meinrad had erected a chapel in 838.

Schänis - Federihüttli - Federigrat - Federispitz - Federigrat - Obernäten - Schwanten - Schänis

Itinerary

As soon as one arrives in this village with its 3500 residents, the direction of the hiking route becomes obvious. One cannot miss the Federimassiv - the goal of the hike. Starting at the Schänis railway station, one walks along the main road toward the village center, leaving this road after approx. 150 meters, at the Rathausplatz. At the Rathaus fountain the route wends its way between rows of houses, crosses through a new group of buildings and is already through the most heavily populated part of the village. Now all one has to do is follow the yellow hiking signposts to Ledi (520m) - Wasserhüttli - Federi-Seilbahnstation - Federiwald - Federihüttli - Federigrat - Federispitz. From Federispitz you'll descend the east side of the mountain by taking the path down to Alp Obernäten - Schwanten at the Federigrat (1701m) signpost, instead of returning to the Federihüttli. You'll reach the Schänis Bergstrasse and follow it into Schänis village.

Note(s)

The Federihüttli is open every weekend from Whitsuntide to the end of October, under the auspices of the «Federiclub», and even every day during the summer school vacation. The view of the Linth area is superb! You can also stay overnight. Tel: +41 (0)55 615 14 41 or, when no one is there, President Kurt Schoch, +41 (0)55 615 27 48.

Variations

Alternative A: start at the Obermatt parking lot (reached by car via Rufi) and hike via Beischnaten to the Federiwald. The descent is the same as the ascent (total walking distance: 9 km / altitude difference: 1125 m / time: 4 hrs).

Starting point

Siebnen, rail station

Places along the route

Siebnen - Isenburg - Schwändelen - Schwändeli - Stockberg - Tostel - Schübelbacher Bann - Siebnen

Itinerary

Many mountains will never become well known. The Stockberg, located at the entrance to the Wägital, is one of these. Its shape, reminiscent of a somewhat too flat camel's hump, is not impressive, and its neighbors are higher and better known. Another reason why only a few people climb this mountain: one cannot get very close to it by car or public transport. It's much easier to get to the Bachtel, Etzel, Schnebelhorn & co. From the railway station one walks through the village of Siebnen. After passing the hydroelectric power plant, which transforms falling water from the Wägital into electricity, you'll start to climb. Later you will find yourself on a little road that you follow up to the Schwändelen. Your reward here will be the wonderful outlooks that this location offers. Between richly blooming meadows and a steel blue sky you'll see the whole group of prominent Wägital peaks. Chöpfenberg, Tierberg, Bockmattli, Zin-dlenspitz, Mutteristock and Fluebrig are still crowned with spring snow. Above Schwändeli one trav-erses a wood on a picturesque, little-known trail before one reaches the summit with its terrific view. Your map can tell you what awaits you now: after a steep meadow comes a gently descending gravel path to Tostel. At the end it will get really steep. The pass snakes at times down stairs and blocks of stone through the Schübelbacher Bann.

Somewhat later, the trail to «Lützelsee» reaches the high trail from the Pfannenstiel over the Mülihölzli to Rapperswil. From the Buechstutz section the Stuckiweg runs along the edge of the woods. Through the trees we catch a glimpse of the little Seeweidsee. Our next goal is the Lutikon pond with its Egli-Haus, worth seeing. Next is the Lützelsee with its beach, popular on warm days. After a side trip up to the Bochslenhöchi with its signs identifying the Alps and a view of Rapperswil, Lake Zurich and the mountains, we approach the hamlet of Lützelsee. The signpost «Grüningen» takes us on the path round the pond to Hasel pond, where a resettling of white storks provides an attraction for young and old. The path continues to Adletshusen and via Hof Reipen to Itzikon. Finally it is a short stretch along the idylic Töbeliweiher to the little town of Grüningen, where a bit of sightseeing is well worthwhile.

The beautiful vale of Batzberg

Rüti station

Places along the route

Rüti - Niggital - Grossweiher - Mettlen - Güntisberg - Wald

Itinerary

A large, beautiful dell, filled with water and enjoying great biodiversity, is found on the south slope of the Batzberg, west of the hamlet of Mettlen. The large pond features unique flora and fauna, including a number of orchid species, grass snakes, dragonflies and butterflies. The main attraction of the large pond is, however, the frogs. More about them later in our excursion tip. One leaves the S5 in Rüti and hikes in an easterly direction along the official hiking path. This traverses residential areas at first and then the extensive woods on the Batzberg. Although these hiking trails and gravel paths are only a few steps from the towns of the agglomeration, one seldom meets another person. The quiet appears to attract above all the batrachians, which can be fairly noticeable both optically and acoustically! The year begins for the grass frogs and common toads with the awakening of spring. They creep at the start of the season out of the undergrowth in the woods and make their way to the shallow water, where they lay their eggs. Local residents speak of a mass movement, an invasion, that always takes place at this time. Sometimes one can hardly set foot on the path without stepping on one of the slimy animals. Especially valuable for visitors to the large pond is the fact that frogs communicate with other species. They react, for example, to the noise of road and air traffic as well as to the human voice. The frog pond is thus just the right place for a song or a poem. For the frogs, it is the rhythm in the repertoire that is important, and on a good evening you'll be able to conduct a sizable choir. One can have fun and still obey the rules of the nature reserve. Stay on the path, don't pick the flowers and carry out the remains of your picnic when you leave. At the end of your hike you'll leave the large pond and come to the picturesque little ponds, the Mettlen and the Güntisberg. Now enjoy a beer in the Sonnengarten and then follow the path to the Wald railway station.

Oberer Atzmännig - Rotstein - Tweralpspitz - Chrüzegg - Schindelberg - Schnebelhorn - Roten - Steg

Itinerary

One must climb ten mountains when one hikes along one of the most beautiful routes in the pre-alpine region. The high points of the tour from Atzmännig to Steg are Tweralpspitz, Chümibarren and the highest Zurich mountain, the Schnebelhorn. Corresponding to a tour including several mountains of 4000 m height in the Valais, we have the route from Atzmännig to Steg in the Töss valley. To be sure, they are at an altitude 3000 meters lower, and one does not need crampons or a rope. But the peaks called Schwammegg (1282 m), Rotstein (1285 m), Tweralpspitz (1332 m), Chrüzegg-Chümibarren (1314 m), Habrütispitz (1275 m), Rossegg (1254 m), Schindelberghöchi (1234 m), Schnebelhorn (1292 m), Hirzegg (1088 m) and Roten (1148 m) are also demanding. There are many drop-offs, and the commemorative crosses along the way remind one that fatal accidents are also possible here. The hike begins in Obere Atzmännig after a pleasant ride on the chairlift. Shortly after leaving the mountain terminus comes the first steep climb. Then one follows the ridge in the Rotstein direction. From there, one has a splendid view of the Toggenburg, Säntis and Churfirsten. One continues to the highest point on the route, the Tweralpspitz, and 20 minutes later one arrives at the Chrüzegg. The next descent passes through the mossy, dark fir forest to the Habrütispitz. From the Schindelberghöchi on one follows the border between St. Gallen and Zurich, and then comes the steep climb to the highest Zurich mountain. In the Restaurant Tierhag below the Schnebelhorn one can enjoy some well-earned nourishment, and then there are only two peaks more. An autumn hike in the beech woods around the Hirzegg and the Roten is delightful. From Roten it is only a short distance to the Hulftegg «motorcycle pass». Gravel paths and tarred roads bring one to Steg, where the train takes one back to the lowlands.

The Kraxel Pudding Stone Classic

Starting point

Mittlerwengi, car park

Places along the route

Mittlerwengi - Ober Rossalp - Speer - Furggen - Chüemettler - Obere Bogmen - Mittlerwengi

Itinerary

One is richly rewarded for climbing up the imposing pudding stone pyramid, the Speer: hundreds of peaks are to be seen, from Tirol to the Valais Alps. All of Lake Zurich and Lake Constance are spread out before one. One begins this technically demanding tour up the Speer and its neighbor Chüermettler between Mittlerwengi and the Oberen Rossalp. The trail then continues to the north flank of the Speer. One is immediately challenged by the first pudding stone chunks that one must climb, as they are fairly demanding. Just as well, for anyone finding this proof of fitness and technical mastery too difficult should turn around and try it from the southwest. The higher one climbs the more threatening it is to look down - at the same time, one has a greater chance of meeting ibexes. These animals were reintroduced to this area in the 1990s. They exhibit little fear of people - one can observe them on the rocky terraces of the Speer from just a few meters away. After a climb of about half an hour among the cliffs, one arrives at the peak platform by means of a metal stairway(!). Here one can enjoy the panorama, described at the entryway, and then continue along the ridge to the southwest. After a descent toward Hinterwengi of about 400 meters difference in altitude, one turns off on the trail to Chüemettler. This little bother of the Speer also presents one with a super view. A few meters south of the peak, one turns onto the climbing trail in the direction of Obere Bogmen. The cliffs of the Chüemettler are not as high as those of the Speer, but one is thankful nonetheless for the ropes and posts that impart security on this climbing trail. Arriving at Obere Bogmen, one is rewarded with a good lunch in the Alpine restaurant. The owner, Fritz Kohler, prepares a Bogmen platter for CHF 17, featuring excellent bacon, Salsiz and cheese. The trail down from the Bogmen is very steep, until one reaches the Mittlerwengi parking lot about half an hour later.

Itinerary

Our holiday walk begins in the midst of the agglomeration at the Kempraten railway station, below the almost completely built up bedroom community of Lenggis. One immediately walks by a few examples of contemporary agglomeration architecture: first Thomas Schmidheiny's blue brick temple, then one-family houses with post-modern decor, carved wood decor in Black Forest style and unadorned blocks. A short climb 300 meters further on brings one to the Höcklistein vineyard, where grapes for ca. 70,000 bottles of wine are harvested every day, most of them Pinot Noir, RieslingxSylvaner and Räuschling varieties. The gravel trail wanders through the grapes toward Feldbach. Coming upon a large estate, one passes into Canton Zurich and arrives a few steps further at the Schlatt pond. Shortly before Feldbach, one must go north, past a farm and then on to the Schlattstrasse. A few meters further and one follows the Obere Chlausstrasse steeply uphill to the Schwösterrainstrasse. The walk along the hillside enables one to enjoy the view of the lake and the Alps. Then it is just a few steps downhill through the idyllic countryside to the Sageli-Felsenhof restaurant. One then has a choice of continuing over the Höcklistein back to the Kempraten railway station or wandering through Schlatt, thus sparing oneself an excursion to Ballenberg.

After passing through the Waggital, Aahalden and Mugeren, we find the Schlieregg picnic area just the place to relax and enjoy the view. From there the charming village of Hirzel is not far. Key words for Hirzel: Johanna Spyri, Meta Heusser and the Doktorhaus. One can learn more about the author of «Heidi» in the town museum, the former schoolhouse. And now comes the highest point of the hike, at 755 m, shortly after Vorderen Höhe. We make a sharp turn in Hirzel-Höhi and pass around the Chruzelenmoss nature preserve, cross (careful!) the heavily traveled highway over the Hirzel and start down to the Aamüli. The hiking trail leading through Fuchsenbüel is only a few years old, and soon we see the many buildings of Au-Wädenswil. Our hike ends at the Au railway station.

Wetland Tour from the Gold Coast to Oberland

Starting point

Stäfa, Lindenbänkli

Places along the route

Stäfa - Risi - Seeweid - Lutikon - Adlethusen - Reipen - Landsacher - Bubikon

Itinerary

A hike from Stäfa to Bubikon leads through several marshes and other intact natural landscapes. The tour starts above Stäfa near the Lindenbänkli bus stop. Between Risi and Bueschstutz it proceeds through forests and meadows. At Seeweid the view will open over the Ütziker Ried marsh with its numerous ponds. Then you will wander through the orchards of Buen and Lutikon above Hombrecktikon. In Hasel on the shores of the Lützelsee a wine tavern with a sunny terrace is the perfect place for a break. In spring and summer the Lützelsee storks can be seen frolicking in the water. You will come to Reipenhof after traversing Weiler Adlesthusen. After going through the Altrüte forest you will see the fourth marsh of the day, the Reitbacher Riet. Between Landsacher and the final destination in Bubikon you can enjoy the view as you walk through the Bergli Riet. This greenbelt between Stäfa and Bubikon is the perfect place to leave your worries behind. Those who want to see a bit more have ten nature preserves a short distance from the hiking path. Most of them are marshes and ponds. The largest include the Lützelsee and the Lutiker Riet.

Places along the route

Wägital Oberhof - Aberli - Aberliboden - Zindlen - Zindlenspitz - Hohfläschenmatt - Hohfläschhütte - Aberli - Oberhof Wägital

Itinerary

«No chance to get up there», one thinks when one looks at the Zindlenspitz from the Wägital. For those with a good head for heights, however, this climb is not much more than a hard, but worthwhile walk. The Zindlenspitz is like Jekyll and Hyde: from Rapperswil-Jona it appears to be a leaning hunchbacked cliff that at some point will drift into the Wägitalersee. Looked at from the Wägitalersee, it appears to be a stone needle resting on a broad base, and thus meant only for top climbers. From Glarus, on the other hand, one can see only steep meadows with a few cliffs. Starting at the Wägitalersee, below the Blattenwald, one leaves the lake road and takes the hiking trail toward Aberli. After only a few minutes one is rewarded for rising early: the mirror-smooth lake now lies in the shade, while behind it Fluebrig and Aubrig are dazzling in the morning sun. Further attractions of this early stretch are knotty fir trees and very old sycamores. Shortly before the Aberli, one branches off to the right in the Aberliboden direction. Here you can recuperate a bit before you start really going uphill. The stony and steep trail from the Aberliboden passes through the picturesque Bruchwald and finally through a rocky area. After ca. 1 3/4 hours one arrives at the first Zindlenalp. On Oberen Zindlen one can see into Glarus. At this point one has already mastered 900 of the total 1165 meters difference in altitude. The goal no longer seems threatening, for the trail passes through a steep pasture toward the peak. At the end are still three harmless crags, to be climbed on all fours. Far below lies the blue-green Wägitalersee, between Schiberg and Gross Aubrig one can see part of Lake Zurich, with Rapperswil-Jona and the Zurich Oberland in the background. The first few meters of the descent lead one along the trail on which one has ascended, and then one turns left in the Rossalpelispitz direction. This trail is marked with the blue and white symbol that means there are a few especially steep passages ahead. They are outfitted with chains, however, and no problem for hikers with a good head for heights. If you wish, you can follow the ridge up to the Rossalpelistock peak. On the downhill journey one sees yet more sides of this mountain with many faces: craggy flanks and terraces and, from the Höhfläschen, an impressively large cliff.

Note(s)

How to get there: by car to Blattli, or by train to Siebnen and then postbus to Innerthal (plus 5 km). Return trip: car from Blattli or postbus from Innerthal, train from Siebnen.
