"Venice In Zürich... In 1798, occupied by Austrian and Russian forces, Zürich defended itself with canons against the French army from this very spot. Nowadays, however, the Schanzengraben is more reminiscent of a Venetian canal. It is a quiet area with a life all of its own - from here, two meters below normal road level, the hustle and bustle of the city appears very distant."
